If we can teach our children to manage emotions, the argument goes, we’ll have less bullying and more cooperation.

If we can teach our children to manage emotions, the argument goes, we’ll have less bullying and more cooperation.

Help Little Ones Rediscover

I am humbled that in my line of duty I have come across needs that blow my mind  to break the heart. However, it takes more than compassion, sacrifice, and guts to step and declare your duty. Among us, there are those who have come across challenges of what the world has sunk in terms of lack of basic human needs. There are no limited resources, they are only limited generous hearts. We can choose to sympathize and cry for a moment or we can decide to dive in and make a small or huge difference into something beautiful.

On our highway to a dream for a better world for us and all, it's a road riddled with risks and they are many . You wish you could do it and save humanity from disease, hunger, ignorance, and prejudice, if only you had all the worldly powers; spiritual, political, financial or social. But then your analyze to realize you have got nothing. But there is something we all have, a sense, mind, heart that can convict us on this road. Sometimes all you have is a dream scripted in your mind which you would like to follow somehow, perhaps halted or lucky you, to the bitter better end. One day heartbreak hurts and the next thing all you have to do is to take action to the road less traveled. You walk and walk and finally you reach some destined place with something purposely meant to heal. But with the already heavy burden laden on your shoulders and your yearning and desperation from your heart to make things real and practical, you get thirsty, lonely, angry with restlessness. But then you look around and all those good people who are sharing the love, smiles,  you are inspired to dream bigger, connect and attract and the, in the end , a community , an institution, Nongovernmental organization or movement comes alive to prove inhumanness and pave the way for inherent dignity.

Our desire for a better world of children couldn't have become earlier than today. With the ever changing world that is putting every need of a modern child into danger, our small roles is to ensure that in the course of education which forms an integral part of their growth and development, its well taken care of, properly guided and propelled towards a great world of freedom, achievement, and joyfulness. Whether a child comes from a suburb or a ghetto their needs meet at one point, they need to be educated and above all, they are little super achievers. I have noted how children play with happiness when they forgot where they are coming from. Children in the field should be a replica of what they mind should be always, pure with innocence. Whenever the world turns crude towards the needs of our children, much of what we dream and aspire for a better future is compromised and put into an analysis. The question being whether we are duty bound, responsible and accountable for their good.

We must stand firm and declare to all who may dare to listen, whatever you are you can identify with the needs of our children and build a bridge to whatever needs and wants. It can it be social, physical, emotional, intellectually or psychological or spiritual you can provide a source for them. Our school that is ridden with children from an impoverished background, the challenges ever enormous, too big to bear and too emotional to listen to. But like a compact that keeps on playing forward you realize they need to confront your soul now and then. Please join me at Fremo School and safeguard this promise.

The Discpline of a teacher that role models Children

Well today I want to discuss among others punctuality, dressing code and managing your class.
I want to emphasize that punctuality should be the source of discipline in class. In time is what determines success from failure. When you come to school all along you should have prepared yourself before what is a head of your for the day. You should be the first to be in your class to usher each child and welcome them to make feel at home in class. A good trainer welcomes, ushers and smiles into his/her class their children. Imagine after a long weekend and the children have somehow disconnected from the normal school routine realities and then even as they make their way to school on arrival, they get a welcome warmly from the teacher asking them about how they spent their weekends, did they go to church, their whereabouts of their families and lastly finishes with how the homework was done. In this scenario above the trainee walking in and receiving the pupils with such a wonderful compassionate reception strengthens the bond between the learner and the trainee. More so reporting in time, gives you an upper hand to plan lessons properly and get your schedules get focused as the new day unfolds. You cannot castigate your pupils for being late when yourself come in late, excusing yourself every other time and always apologizing. Planning your lessons gives you an additional confidence together resources imagine yourself conducting your class actively rather than imaginary.

Dressing code is an issue to most educators. They don’t seem to get it, most of them. My belief is that no trainee should make judgment of the dressing of the trainee. They should not be driven to see beyond the brains. The dressing code should be ethically accepted, formal and conservative. The dressing code should pass the judgment of the in-laws. Unwarranted exposure should be discarded and discouraged at all costs to ensure learners get their minds clean, attentive and focused. Ladies should desist from among others, short skirts, blouses, dresses showing cleavage and transparent attires. Mean should tuck their shirts properly, straight trousers with flat fly. The belt should be simple, executive not shouting. Tight and baggy trousers and tops should be avoided at all costs to make it easier for the children to concentrate.

Lesson plans should be followed strictly with not alternation, as they are on the timetable. All teachers should follow the timetable and coordinate lessons with strict adherence to the timing and programming. From established sources some teachers tend to alternate class lessons carelessly and they end up having some subjects “favorites” than others. “Favorite” subjects timetable are traded with less favorite leading to uncovering of some lessons at the end of the term. The schemes of work should be drawn and managed with professionalism. No substitution at all costs should be permitted to manipulate the system of coverage of the syllabus.

FAMILY BREAKDOWNS DESTROYING THE HOPE FOR A BRIGHT TOMORROW FOR CHILDREN

"I am for the children to be jealously guarded, securely protected, warmly insulated against any crude backlash and be fully insured against any intentions meant to destroy their full development and growth".

We are punishing our children, creating a hell on earth for them. We have made personal, selfish and betraying decisions that are leaving them dead emotionally. Listening to the ordeals of what the children at FreMo Elementary School I was left wondering whether a home is any safer, secure and homely for the children of the millennia. Divorce, separation, death and domestic abuses are the burdens laden on the shoulders of the little ones. We have destroyed our self images in front our children. We quarrel, fight, drink, and abuse each other in front of our children. We only care about our needs, wants, wishes and self satisfaction to free our emotions. Just because we sired and carried them through pregnancy doesn’t not mean they don’t have rights or even worse our thinking that our escapades override theirs. We are entrusting our children to the teachers in school to bring the best out in them, but let me tell you something we are doing teachers injustice by sending to them dead logs of children, abused, bleeding and heartbroken inside out. They don’t have capability, platform and resources to handle all these challenges. We are hiding ourselves in our own frustrations domestically, socially and financially but downloading them to our little children. I don’t have any moral standing or authority to judge, crucify, conclude and decide on what happens when couples don’t agree but I am for the children to be jealously guarded, securely protected, warmly insulated against any crude backlash and be fully insured against any intentions meant to destroy their full development and growth. All decisions must be a win for the child. The child must walk as the ultimate winner spared love for his story to tell.

I am yet to come to terms of what was narrated by our teachers as we sat for our weekly staff meeting. As a policy we meet each Tuesday afternoon and asses our progress as a team and each teacher gives a report of how each class is achieving and if at all if there is any other issues that we could share and agree on. The baby class teacher gave her opening remarks and informed us how she was trying her best to keep her class on the move through sounds, drawing, counting, reciting and memorization. She went further to tell us how she has managed to keep her class in control despite the bad influences most of the children have been through and have been showing indiscipline from the time admission. Then she went to explain her worst fears, worth challenging. Most children are coming to school very dirty because nobody is at home to care for them. Mother has separated with father, they no longer stay together and the father comes home very late not caring whether they have eaten or not. Sometimes when he arrives home, he is screaming, tossing and throwing chairs all over the place, asking them where their mother is hiding. Last night they slept very late, now this morning the boy walked to school, smelling and having urinated himself from last night. On arrival the little comrades were uncomfortable with his smell and therefore reported him to their teacher. The teacher decided to take him out and try to bath wet him, while talking to him kindly in the event to gather more information on how life at home has been at home lately. The teacher herself could not control her emotions from what the boy was describing about home, but as a leader she tried and held her tears back to make it better for the little “John”.

She went on to tell the staff about the other day. After class, she was going home and two little children in her class ran after her and they said “Teacher Marion we are going to your place tonight’. Teacher Marion asked them what their parents would think of her if she takes them to her place. The little ones are aged between 5 and 7 years. They told her, mama fought with dad last week and mama walked out with our little brother. Since then we have been taking care of ourselves. We no longer take meals at home. What we eat at school as tea break and lunch break is what sustains us for the night. We rarely take baths at home because mama is not present to prepare us. The last day mother was at home, father had come home very drank and wanted to kill all of us. Lately, mama passes by home after every three days leaving for us some little food which we hide so that dad doesn’t find out she was around and that we have eaten. As you read through all these you are left wondering where the children’s department, government, NGos and all children’s rights organs and civil societies. By the way, that is what I keep asking myself since then. At least for us we stepped forward and are now helping somehow. They are hurting, heartbroken, full of anguish, and facing uncertainty in the crude world of hopelessness. Someone tells me where is tomorrow?

The class two Teacher took the stage and she gave her story in her class. We thought we had enough of emotional drainage until we opened our ears to hearing more of anguish, I could see the quietness, the silence and dismay on our looks. We gathered some energy, while swallowing hard to hide our tears and kept on staying alert intently listening to all of these conspiracies against children. I have two children in my class who are siblings; their father was shot and died sometimes last year. Their mother learnt of his death from a friend who was with him while he got shot. The man was the breadwinner,  since then the family has been searching for his body all over the mortuaries but he has never been traced till today. The children have been staying at home not knowing where to go to school. When I asked them why they could not go to public school, they told her “You see even public schools are not for free. We were sent away from one public school because mama could not afford to pay the tuition that the headmaster had asked for. Last month mother told us she had met one Moffat, the Director of the school who requested her to bring us to this school and start learning for free. We are not having any peace at home; mama goes looking for work every morning, sometimes she comes home late with food sometimes and sometimes with nothing. We rarely eat at home. Luckily what we are given here at school is enough to carry us through the night until the tea break here at school……………..to be continued………………………………….

………….

And came the class three patron, his class is doing fine and all children are responding well to all that he is inculcating and training them. His first challenge is one boy who was admitted from another school and was brought in by his parents because as they put it, they got discouraged about the system in the other school. They were inspired by the FreMo Elementary School of making children enlightened, empowered and made whole through education not forgetting to mention the school culture, beliefs, mottos and core values. The young boy has been experiencing troubles in class work as a result of the under education from where he came from. Well after thorough training and assessment, the boy has got his deep seated challenges in grammar, mathematics, creativity and games all well planned and overcame by intensive tuition. We realized that his former school did not have enough resources in skills, materials and goodwill to make him a standard three. The boy is trying his best to catch up with his colleagues and as for now we hope by the end of this term he could have attained his level. The other day the girl was asked to recite any poem she knows. She went to recite a poem about a home that is full of frustrations. Children are punished anyhow, their mother beaten every other night and their father so irresponsible that she care less of the necessities and basics needed required for a proper and normal learning of them in school. She ended the poem by asking loudly, why Lord, why us, what did we do to deserve this. Somebody help! I don’t get it. How the poem fitted well to what was happening at home? I am yet to comprehend what goes around these children’s minds, brains and hearts.

Yes as we continue with the spirit of globalization, we donate towards save the children, UNICEF, World Vision and all others, remember many parts of the world little, young and tender children are hurting innocently not knowing who to run to. Will you care today? Will you join us? Asante Sana. Be the voice of FreMo children wherever you may be.

Inspired and Mentored By My Elementary School Teacher.

FreMo Elementary School- Frank

To enroll school was something I wished so badly. I envied my elder brothers and sisters every day when they set off to school. I wanted to leave the boring home, despite the fun with my younger sister. At home, we could play, have meals early and then enjoy too much sleep anytime of the day. I had no idea what and how the school culture would look like, but I admired them all; the uniforms, the books, pens, and assignments that were brought from school by my older siblings. It is, for this reason, I found my way to the school before my time and ended up being an underage candidate by the time I completed my studies in primary education and secondary education.

My first experiences at school were not only frightening but also sickening. The few first days seemed so peculiar and precarious. For the first time since my anxiety to join the school, I regretted dearly and was late for me to come to appreciate the quiet and lovable environment at our home, "east or west home is the best to be", so they say. Anxiety, fear, and uncertainty all compounded made me vulnerable and therefore I desired nothing than home and mama. I craved my freedom back, my unlimited sleep quicker and my familiarization of my former comfort zone forthwith. But soon things changed drastically for the better. This came from the most expected quarters, my elementary teacher. She exhibited the calmness, motherly and caring attitude for us who were scared to run faster from school. She knew what we little beings wanted and was aware ahead of our insecurities with the anxiety, hopelessness, and helplessness we were all going through in our hidden hearts yet visible from our faces. She captured my prison and welcomed me to her class. She supervised with inspiration. She guided without disdain and above all she made me forget my mother those school moments. Teacher Prisca gave to me the confidence that my parents was undertaking, teaching and instilling in me tenderly at home. She guided with a tough yet a warm hand. She was the mother in class, the coach in physical education and the guide in class work with love full of compassion. She made all of us in her class to feel potential and to discern our purpose and consequently, we knew exactly what would be the school roles for us and its demands and expectations. She opened our hearts to receive and embrace both sides of  formal education that were to enlighten and purge ignorance from us to make us better and in the end better the community and its dysfunctional systems.

Possibly, it's because of her that I came to admire and love education with equal measure. As time went by my grades rose steadily and that deep faith and yearning for more education rose steadily and school became normal, loving and wanting. Madam Prisca taught and inspired us the virtues of kindness, respect for authority and the need to be hard workers so as to succeed and achieve. Again and again, she instilled the self-belief and the self-esteem that could be a pillar of formal education, when I self-examine the little confidence I personify, she had a stake. She knew if she did not have faith in us then the expectations from home were nothing less of an evaporator.

In fact, very few teachers came after to rise above our idolizing her. She was a human being, a motivator, mature, tender, loving and all these summed up the desired educator in any given place, time or level. Many times I have been asked who my best teacher would be. I don’t feel a betrayal or mean to none when without doubt reality strikes. I would recommend her to my son and daughter and I think you could as well. This is my hope and faiths for our teachers as they mentor, guide to inspire the little children not only at our elementary school but also to the little children all over the world.
